Garmin Connect is Using Bing Maps and I Don’t Like It

I just upload the data from my Garmin Forerunner 405 and was excited to see how my run in Dumaguete looked like in the map.  The review map is one of the features I like about the Garmin but to my surprise there was a change in Garmin Connect.  Instead of using Google Maps, they are now using Bing Maps.

It was disappointing.  Bing maps is not as detailed as Google Maps.  It lacks the road names, landmarks and other information that is already available in Google Maps.  Maybe the Bing Maps for other countries are detailed, but the maps here in the Philippines provide very inferior features.

Check out some complains from the Garmin Forums too.

This is the best detail of my 31.5K run in Dumaguete.  I can no longer zoom it further to see the streets.  Booo!

I hope Garmin will bring back Google Maps.  But their press release last November 18 says “Garmin has a rich history of collaborating with many industry leaders, and using Bing maps with Garmin Connect provided an opportunity to build upon our existing relationship with Microsoft.”

Are there options on where to upload data from Garmin?
