Five Tips On How to Run Safe While Listening to Music

Previously, we talked about the great benefits of listening to music while running.  While it is beneficial to a workout, some are concerned about the safety of the runners while listening to music.  In fact, there were some races before that do not allow runners to wear headphones.

Here are some safety concerns related to listening to music while running:

  • Athletes are injured as they become unaware of potential accidents they are getting into.  This is because they could not hear other sounds except the one coming from the headphones.
  • With music, runners might not be realizing the pain incurred by your feet or legs. This is running over your limits because you are having so much fun listening to different tracks.
  • Music can make you forget that you are already tired by boosting your willingness to do more and out do your previous pace. However, your whole body may already be protesting as it is not used to a faster movement and different cadence.

For music lovers, here are some tips on how to run safe while listening to music.

  • Turn down the volume.  This is to ensure that you can still hear sounds from around you to enable you to respond quickly to potential dangers and accidents.  Be aware of warning signals like a car honking or a dog barking.
  • Listen only at certain intervals of the run.  Music can still be part of the training but try not to listen to it all throughout, from start to finish and all the time.  One strategy is to play the music before you start running just to set your mood for the task or when running uphill to give you an extra push.
  • If you are running outdoor, choose location that traffic is nonexistent or very familiar.
  • Run with a friend or a buddy as there is safety in numbers.  If possible, try to get run with someone not wearing headphones so someone can hear what is going on around you.
  • If you can’t bring a partner, then you might bring your dog. Pets would love exercise and they don’t mind being tuned out.
