I Had My First Blister Today
Since I started running, I never had a blister… until now. I seldom get to run nowadays because I would love to spend time with Gab. [Read about Gab vs Running]. And just this afternoon, I was able to spare 30 about minutes for a short run near our place. But I got my taste of a blister, in return.
I ran for a short 5K. I had my usual route. But compared to the previous week, I had a faster pace and shorter walk breaks. By the time, I reached 3K, I started to feel a burning sensation on my left foot. It starts to get intense that I stopped at a corner to check it. I removed my shoes and viola, a pocket of fluid is trapped beneath the skin. It’s a blister!
It’s about an inch. Quite big. I can’t walk well.
Skin blisters are typically caused by forceful rubbing. I was wearing my Vibram KSO so I was not wearing socks. My skin was in direct contact with the thin rubber sole. Since I was running quite fast, the rubbing was frequent. And since I am gaining weight, the rubbing was forceful. All the elements for making a blister are present.
But I can’t blame my KSO. Why? I should mention where my blister is located. It’s on my left heel. Right on the middle of the heel. I am a heel striker. I’m using a shoe design for midfoot and forefoot strikes. Had I landed correctly with these shoes, I could have avoided it.
Will this keep me out of running for a few weeks again?
Let’s see when I try on my cushioning shoes this week.
Have a safe run everyone.
