Better Hydration Means Better Performance

Like many runners and athletes, I am particular with my hydration during races and during  training.  The longer and more strenuous my run is, the more important it is for me to drink and replenish the water lost through the sweat.  And it is not just water that I need to keep at my fridge.  I have sports drinks that are specially formulated to replenish more than just the water that I lost during the run.

Studies show that sports drinks are formulated to be more effective than water as they contain carbohydrates, and electrolytes.  Gatorade is the only sports drink scientifically formulated to provide the body with the optimal amount of fluid and electrolytes it needs to be properly hydrated and improve performance.

Hydrating to Fuel Up

I would always feel better right after drinking Gatorade in the middle of the run.  I would walk towards a hydration station, drink a cup and then would feel energized.  I'm sure you have experienced the same thing.  
Gatorade contains carbohydrates that are considered as the body's "energy powerhouse".  These carbohydrates will fuel the muscles, boost energy and build glycogen stores.  That’s why carboloading is very important in endurance events.

Hydrating To Delay Fatigue

A study showed that taking carbohydrate-containing sports drinks during prolonged intense exercise might delay fatigue. [Read about the study here.] This is good news for runners.  The longer it takes for us to feel tired, the better our performance will be.  That's why I think it is best to take sports drink before, during and after the run.  Not just after the run like I used to.  The study recommends taking 8-12 oz (240-350 ml) of sports drink that contains carbohydrate every 15-20 minutes.

Hydrate To Regulate the Body

I read of stories about runners getting too little or too much water.  Both situations turned out to be dangerous for them since.  It created an imbalance of electrolytes in the body. Sodium is one of the main types of electrolytes.  It gets depleted during running and needs to be replenished.  Too little or too much sodium can cause cells to malfunction, and extreme levels of sodium in the blood can be fatal.

That is why For running, water is definitely not enough.  Gatorade is the only sports drink scientifically formulated to provide the body with the optimal amount of fluid and electrolytes it needs to be properly hydrated and improve performance.
