Makau Sets New Marathon Record in Berlin
Posted On September 26, 2011
Patrick Macau of Kenya ran the Berlin Marathon with a time of 2:03:38 to set a new world record for a marathon. Macau improved the world record by 21 seconds set by Haile Gebreselasse in 2008. Makau led the entire 42.195 km and pulled away from the pack at KM 27.
Gebreselassie tried to catch up but stopped at the course. He ran again after resting for less than a minute but eventually stopped again after eight kilometers for the second and last time. Gebreselassie also dropped out of the New York Marathon last November.
In the women’s category, Florence Kiplagat placed first with a time of 2:19:44. Two-time Berlin Marathon champ Irina Mikitenko placed second (2:22:18) and world record holder Paula Radcliff placed third (2:23:46).

took me a while to find it streaming online, finally found it on oleoletv.com and was able to catch the guys at 20km. Made me want to run after watching it but still can’t coz i’m recovering from the flu. Haaaayyy!!! Haha! On a side note, i also heard from the commentators that Makau ran sub-1 hour for the half marathon EIGHT TIMES! That’s mind-blowing!
