La Union Ku Ikaika Marathon 3/5/10/21/42K (La Union)
La Union Ku Ikaika Marathon will be held on May 19, 2012 at San Juan, La Union. The La Union ku ikaika Marathon (only the strong will endure) was inspired by the Ku Ikaika Challenge of Hawaii – The most prestigious Surfing Event in America. Much like in Ku Ikaika Challenge the survivors of the event who proved to be brave and strong despite the pounding and difficulty of overcoming Gigantic waves was treated with great respect and accolade; the survivor or finishers of La Union Ku Ikaika Marathon will be treated the same because they prove to be and deserved to be called the real STRONG men and women in the sport of running and that is true in every sense of the word!

sa mismong seashore po ba? as in buhangin po? thanks.
aedis yung 3 and 5K ay sa mismong beach o tabing dagat o mismong sa baybayin ng San Juan surfing beach, ito po ay inspired ng Skyathon ng Boracay at di magpapaiwan sa ganda ng tanawin, pls check the fanpage of irunner sa facebook just type irunner, thank you
do we need to wear our shoes sa 3k and 5k events? kung barefoot po kami wala naman po bang mga bubog or matutulis na bato sa area?!
steve, first, you can still wear your shoes sir just like what we did when we test-run the 3 and 5K but if you decide to run barefooted we assure you that the beach is safe from matutulis na bato and bubog salamat po
42K full marathon is a combination of 10% flat road run, 40% tobacco/corn fields run (road is also flat), 40% uphill/downhill run (a mountain ridge of Bacsil-mini Baguio), and a 10% beach run along the coast of San Juan…kaya sya tinawag na KU IKAIKA is because of the challenge of these four tracks/areas in a single route…Ku Ikaika is a polynesian term meaning Stand Strong…only the strong men will endure…
wow. . interesting. . . sa pampanga na po ba ito. . not familiar with the place kasi. . how about accommodation? (taguig city)
sir Angelo Pampanga is still NOT open for registration as of now…We suggest that you register online via our website, click this link http://www.irunnerscommunity.org/Kahuna/include/kahuna_addparticipant.php after you filled up all details click Register. Next step proceed to a nearest Banco De Oro and deposit your reg fee. Scan your Deposit slip and email to our email account irunnerscommunity@gmail.com For more in inquiries feel free to ask Stan at 0929 2914546. Thank You
hahaha! Sir, on the contrary, Ku Ikaika means “Stand Strong”. The route is hilly. one real challenge to tough runners like you!
awts. . upon checking the day of that date, it falls on saturday! =( . . interesting but this is not for me. . sayang. . sarap sana dito Fresh air noh?
:D.. Angelo, ku ikaika is polynesian (hawaiian to be particular). we really hope you can come join the marathon and visit our province as well.
ah mali na naman ako :P. . kala ko local dialect 🙂
Thanks for the info. .
@sir iRunners: is there any chance of a shuttle being provided for this event for those coming from manila? 🙂
QP we are looking for that possibility to use a double decker brandnew bus to service all the Manila and adjacent places runners for their comfort. But rest assured that going to La Union is not only fun but also safe because our province is one of the most peaceful province in the country if not in the world besides Partas Bus company (located in Cubao area) is providing wonderful service to its passengers. See you here in La Union Sir!
thanks, sir! do let us know soon 🙂
sir irunners,
– sure po ba yun na partas bus ang magrerender ng service for the transportation ng runners from manila to la union?
– ilang bus po ang gagamitin?
– may dagdag po ba na fee on our registration to avail the shuttle service? kasi ang greenfield city run ng greentennial ay mag provide ng shuttle service BUT no extra charge for the first 250 registrants nga lang. pero paano kung maraming manileno ang sumali dito? lahat po ba yun ay itatransport nyo with or without extra charge?
as long as we can find na mabait na sponsor to shoulder the travel expense with Partas, malilibre po yan, napakalayo nga lamang po kase ng La Union from Manila kesa tagaytay..but anyhow we are really knocking the doors and hearts of these bus companies para po sa ating mga runners…we are doing and our best sa event na to, we will keep you posted po,,babalitaan po namin agad kayu…salamat
rektikanorunner sir first, we are 60% sure that it will be Partas coz we are still considering other bus companies. we are looking at atleast 4 to 6 bus/shuttle depends on the number of Manila runners who want to join this grand event.
We are working our best to get a sponsor to shoulder some of the expenses for the transpo so that runners will get discount on the fare fee. We cannot assure you that it will be for free considering La Union is 5hours or 200+ Kilometers away from Manila and the price of Gasoline is really high this days. Thank you for your interest to join this historic event, we hope to see you here in La Union
I would make this my first 21k (and a birthday present for me!) if someone would teach me how to go to La Union 🙂
Unless, fellow runners want to go in a group for safety 🙂
jsncruz
partas terminal cubao. ride partas going to north (vigan, laoag, candon, abra). all of them will pass by la union. just tell SAN JUAN LA UNION. they know it. say to manong konduktor, ibaba ka sa KAHUNA RESORTS. thats along the hi-way. 🙂 enjoy!
Sir Jason, Madali lang po byahe papunta dito, just look for Partas Bus Company which is located at Cubao area they provide the best service and their DeLuxe Buses are really comfortable. We are also considering to use a shuttle to fetch runners from Manila in group, once its final we will post it and keep you updated. This i promise you Sir you will treasure your running experience here in La Union babalik balikan nyo ang La Union after this event!
another thing sir irunners, sa tancha nyo anung araw itatransport ang mga runners from manila? the event falls on a saturday right? so friday magtatransport na ba kayo ng runners?
-what time?
-may tutulugan ba ang mga runners if incase you transport us ng May18?
-free ba ang accomodation sa resort or another extra fee?
hope you can lay all the details as soon as possible
April 13, we’ll give details about ur inquiries po…always visit po our fb page http://www.facebook.com/irunnerscommunity ty
Hmm. Ku Ikaika 42k on May 19. Kawasan 42k on May 20.
ARE YOU STRONG ENOUGH? JOIN the La Union KU IKAIKA MARATHON 2012!
JCI Philippines (Junior Chamber International), in its mission to empower young people, is bringing to La Union and the rest of the Northern Philippines, a first-of-its-kind running event: the Ku Ikaika Marathon 2012.
In partnership with Kahuna Beach Resort and Spa, this event will showcase a full 42-kilometer marathon passing through (4) four different areas or tracks: (1) a flat concrete road run, (2) a tobacco/rice/corn field run, (3) a mountain uphill/downhill run, and (4) a beach run.
“Ku IkaiKa” is a Polynesian phrase chosen to aptly describe the whole marathon, which literally translates to “Stand Strong”. Hawaii hosts the Ku Ikaika Surfing Challenge (stand up paddle), one of the most prestigious surfing events in America, where surfers overcome gigantic waves. The La Union Ku Ikaika Marathon will surely challenge not just the physical ability of the runners, but also their will and spirit to endure the race through to the finish line. As the winners and brave challengers of Hawaii’s Ku Ikaika surfing competition are treated with great respect and accolade, the finishers of La Union’s Ku Ikaika Marathon will be regarded with the same because they prove and deserve to be called the real STRONG men and women in the sport of running and that is true in every sense of the word!
It’s not all pain and suffering though. Runners will surely have the chance of discovering the pristine beauty of La Union: its beautiful, breathtaking landscapes—from the coasts and fields of San Juan to rivers of San Gabriel and the ridges of San Fernando City. With San Juan’s famous waves and friendly people, you can definitely say it’s more fun in the Surfing Capital of the Philippines!
Easily accessible both by private or public transport, San Juan, La Union would take six (6) hours by land and forty-five (45) minutes via air travel from Manila. Come with your family and friends to complete your summer experience.
Furthermore, the proceeds of the run will be for a good cause: it is a fund raising effort by the Jaycees in their advocacy to help provide opportunities for youth development.
This marathon is being organized by iRunners Productions.
Go La Union Marathon,,,
Wahhhhhhhh. Kasabay ata to ng medirun!
i plan to arrive at the site around 1-2am and hangout there till the race starts. can i do this coz can’t afford to take a room? by the way can i just register during the race day itself? thanks
naku isinabay sa bohol ultramarathon and kawasan falls marathon. i hope the organizers will reconsider like make it may 26 so that we will have 1 week to rest. maganda pa naman sana ito.
Bohol is moved on Sept 9, right http://www.takbo.ph/2012/03/bohol-marathon-2012-is-moved-to-september-9/ and the Kawasan was previously on June 10, and now its on May 20!!! why not let La Union do it on May 19, and Kawasan on June 10 and Bohol on September 9??? hayssst
im talking abt the bohol ultramarathon not the marathon. kawasan had the final date before la union. give us chance to run these marathons, coz its seldom we have one in the phil. anyway u have weekly short races to join
Jalena, ma’am you dont have to worry to much about the accomodation here first, you can check-in to our official transients houses that only charges 100pesos for overnight stay, second you can bring your tent and just set-up a tent along the beach, dont worry about the security and safety because this event is supported by our very own Governor and he is a stickler when it comes to peace and security, but if you wish to pursue your plan then we will set-up a 24hours hangout-restaurant to accomodate all runners who like you would rather stay and wait for the run. We cant wait to see you here in La Union! With iRunners, it’s gonna be more runs and more fun here in La Union!
nice reply here irunners. see! yun yung magiging problem ng mga locals outside la union particularly runners from manila..
speaking of transient?! can you name those transient houses that offers a Php100 charge for overnyt stay? para alam namin kung saan kami pupunta.. a poster of the event will do. post nyo yung poster nyo sa mga transient houses na accredited nyo.
what we did po sa last event namin was kahit alas dose ng hatinggabi ang mga kapatid natin na mananakbo ay sinundo po namin sa town plaza at kami mismo ang nagdala sa transient na tinuluyan nila…to name they are runners from Isabela…kami po ang naghahatid sa abot ng aming makakaya, yung iba po ay guide na lang namin sila ng mga directions…yung poster po pede po naten yan ilagay sa mga transient na yan maganda pong idea yan,,,salamat
the 100 peso transient houses sound really great. Can i get more info on that irunners? any updates on the buses/shuttles?
more power to your event.
no worries po sa transient, a week before the event po, email us or pm us at fb kung ilan kayu, then we’ll find accomodation for, or kung gusto po nila ng Resort sa Kahuna, discounted naman po yan for runners..well keep you posted sa shuttle…thank you sir
Reine, for a change just try La Union Ku ikaika Marathon and i assure you it will be all worth it! See you here in La Union!
i agree with pinoyultramarathoner, i hope this gets resked to may 26
puno na po ng takbo sa May 3rd/last week…mas siksikan dun,,,when is Kawasan is it May 20, i thought June 10??? and Bohol is on Sept 9 tama po di ba…why not let La Union do it on May 19, then Kawasan on June 10 and Bohol on Sep….suggest lang naman sana…
Announcement: TO ALL RUNNERS WHO PLAN AND EVEN TO THOSE STILL UNDECIDED TO GRACE THE HISTORIC EVENT HERE IN LA UNION, The major sponsors of La Union ku ikaika Marathon (JCI and Kahuna Resorts and Spa) will hold a victory party on the eve of Saturday May 19! Everyone is welcome to attend for free! After a day of vigorous running, runners will have a time to relax, listen to music and meet other runners as well. Local and Manila performers are set to perform to entertain everyone and for sure will get everyone into groove again! Pls Don’t miss this opportunity come and join La Union ku ikaika Marathon bring your loveone, family and friends and share with us this wonderful once in a lifetime event here in Beautiful La Union.
To all fellow runners,We are very much open to re-scheduling of our event to the 26th of May to accommodate runners who earlier have sched. to join other running event. We will let you know after the Holy day break the decision of primary shareholders of the La Union Marathon.
maganda pag malipat yung date. i will be hitting 2 birds with one stone, 2 races with 1 training. isang insayo nalang sa 2 karera, ayos. anong say nyo mga kapwa runners?
Awww… Nature’s Trail Discovery Run and The Greenfield City Run are scheduled on the 27th, Sir. May 12? hehehe nakihaggle sa date ng event 😀
i agree with anton, we’ll be hitting 2 full marathons with 1 practice
ow.. if that the case malabo na makasali dito. kelan po ba nag announce ang la union ku ikaika marathon? kasi last week ng March nag announce na ang Greentennial with their greenfield city run that will happen on May27.
last week po ng march kami nga announce, and before that wala pa kaming nakitang patakbo…anyhow we do not want to disappoint other runners who already filed their leave para sa event na to, gusto po namin suklian ng maayos na event ang lahat ng runners pati ang mga runners all the way pa sa malalayong lugar..salamat po sa inyo
To all my fella runners let me just quote the words of Niki Valero the President of Junior Chamber International in one his text to his fellow JCIian:”on may 19 2012, 1st JCI-Kahuna La Union International Marathon that will be joined by atleast 1500 runners from all over the country and abroad will choose to run 3k, 5k, 10k, 21k, or 42k in a full marathon, one of the 4 international marathon in the entire country. Will start in Kahuna, proceeding thru the beautiful San Juan countryside and elevating towards WWII battle site Bacsil Ridge in San Fernando City (North-side)and making a roundabout towards San Gabriel town; and then back through the picturesque San Juan surfing beach with finish line in Kahuna beach. This event promises to once again strengthen La Union’s reputation as a premier tourist hub in northern Luzon. Come support us as we run forward to greater success!!!
@irunners – I understand the predicament of some regarding the date of the race. why it should be moved, etc.
but I’d rather have the race on the 19th itself. there are races that i opted not to join because of conflicts with the LU marathon. please consider those who are outside La Union who have already filed their leaves and booked accommodations.
also, the month of May is the peak season for surfers/tourists in San Juan, La Union. Changing dates will be a logistics nightmare in terms of accommodation for your runners who want to support your cause.
I AGREE!!!
WE IN IRUNNERS PO AY NANANATILI NA ISASAKATUPARAN ANG EVENT NA ETO SA MAY 19…maraming salamat po!
naku bibihira na nga marathon sa pinas pinagsasabay pa. it’s our opportunity to support marathons in our country sana pero ito nangyayari. so we still have to go abroad to run marathon
napakasarap po ang pagkakataon na eto na makatakbo kayo sa La Union, ibang klaseng event eto, you will pass 4 Tracks- Roads, Fields, Mountain, Beach in just one run…that’s why only the strong will endure…Ku Ikaika Marathoners mabuhay po kayu!
Hi Stan,
Thanks for the detailed description of the routes. I am excited for the race itself. I am sure safety is the number one priority for this? No runner will get lost and enough race marshals are in place?
kudos to sir stan to his great management of the marshals particularly with what he have done to our recent event, the La Union Unity Marathon (LUUM). With Sir Stan in our Group we assure all participating runners that you are in good hand. By the way sir Stan is a Marathoner like us also so he understand the need of every runner.

Nice race but with poor LOGISTICS sad to say. I ran this race
Runners, Friend, this is your Race Director for the La Union ku ikaika Marathon Randy M. Abasolo now composed and ready to tell the story on the side of iRunners because as much as you deserved an explanation we are also obliged to tell the truth because only the truth can liberate us and render us the deserved judgement of people who are affected by the issues
Issue No.1: Delayed release of Singlets
What really happened: The singlets should have been distributed on May 15, 2012 if not with the trouble we suffered from our supplier (BGRP Trading) who promised to deliver the singlets but failed and only able to finish the singlet on May 18, 2012 exactly 10:30PM, and the JCI President (Niki Valero) have to spend on gasoline just to pick up the singlet at Bulacan para po mahabol lang na masuot ito ng Runners before they run. For the record we paid 70K as advance payment but despite the said supplier failed to deliver the singlets as agreed and scheduled. For the record, Niki Valero, a good man as he is paid the balance on time despite of the trouble brought by the delay of the said supplier.
Lesson Learned: Look for a more reliable supplier
Issue No.2 : Shortage of medal
What really happened: The event should have used a Barcode system. What was planned was the registration will stop on the 15th of May and will only accept 30 onsite participants on the eve of the event, this way the needed medals are well accounted and budgeted as well. On May 6 the estimated quantity of medals have been ordered from our supplier. However, on May 8, upon computation/assessment it was found out that the event need to raise more fund to augment the need to pay some obligations of the event, so the Financer decided to shift from Barcode to Manual timing (which is cheaper) coupled with the plea to open the registration until the day of the event in the hope to raise the needed fund. What contributed more to the shortage was the unaccounted and surprise request of the financer (two days before the event) to get atleast 40 medals as his reserved medals for his friends. Because of the turn of the event, the result was, on the day of event medal count are already short by 100plus medals.
Lesson Learned: Ideally, Stick with your horn and fight for your runners and for their medals no matter what the cost or
Practically, implement a ‘first hundred basis’ or the lower categories runners (3k, 5k, 10k) is only good for first hundred finisher and prioritize the half marathoners and full marathoners by making sure they all get their well deserved medals
Issue No. 3 : Inaccurate measurement of the route
What really happened: I have to admit that due to our incapacity to acquire a more sophisticated gadget we got the route measured incorrect. We use a car in the measurement and later we found out that there is a big difference when you use a car especially if you took the right side of the road instead of taking the middle or center of the road during measurement. So an additional 2k was added to the 42k and an additional 1k or so is added to 21k. With regards to 5k we intentionally lengthened it to 200meters to get across to a Resort that is very supportive of our group and promised to help us out in the event.
Lesson Learned: Buy a sophisticated gadget or borrow one.
The truth (is on part of the iRunners) there are only two major issues that haunted us on this event; the chaos brought about during and by the release of singlet can be remedied if and only if the supplier delivered it on time, as promised and agreed by them. The medals that broke the heart of some of our runners (and Us as well) could be remedied if we only have enough sponsors to finance the event and the shift from Barcode to Manual timing could have been avoided and that could prevent the demise/shortage to happen.
I have to admit that in the part of iRunners and AKO personally ay nagkulang dahil, tinanggap ko po ang project na ito na alam ko na napakaiksi ng preparasyon. The project was offered to me 1months and 28days prior to the event. I learned, we learned a lot from this experience and i know that i grow and will continually grow from it. Given a chance i will never let myself and my people go into a battle with little preparation. Given a chance again i will see to it that 6months is the minimum planning period for an event with such a magnitude.
When Stan and I conceptualized the event we thought that at the end of the event the runners will be the one dare to say ‘i stand strong’, nagkamali ako/kami dahil the statement is aptly and more applicable to me, to us because this is what is promise to you my friends and fellow runners, iRunners will stand strong in the midst of it, to stand strong against the trials and adversary to continue give you fun and more runs here in La Union.
We ask for your forgiveness and we hope to see you again (given a chance) here in La Union.
Maraming salamat po.
Sincerely,
Randy M. Abasolo

no prob w regard to the issues raised here, bec medal and singlet for a real runner don’t matter; these are issues for the vain, and vanity has no room for real runners. my concerns though are (and the real issues in this event)1. no announcement that there wold be no energy drink, so many got dehydrated, (there was one station but was located at the very first 3km mark!) 2. no bananas (there was one station though at the 9km mark), 3. no microphone or any signal to acknowledge welcome a finisher, which is at least to appease the runner, 4. very few participants (more runners more fun, more challenging, and more exciting, maybe bec it was announced late and it coincided with the cebu marathon and bohol ultra). so next time dont give marathoners the headache to choose which to run, bec as much as possible we want to run all marathons in the country as we have very few marathons, 5.there’s even no banner about the marathon in fron of the kahuna so the public are clueless what was happening. aside from these though, the event was a good one. race started on time, clean air, panoramic view, expectators were friendly, route was unique and challenging(i salute those who conceptualized this). i hope the event will be held annually. so see you next year! congratulations!
i think let’s be more truthful. the run was sheer chaos…so many promises … so unorganized … and most of all so disappointing!!! that’s the sentiment of most runners of lower categories. sorry but you don’t deserve our accolade.
Well well well, lets take charged this for a experience, but I give u some advice if u want next year to organize, first the hydration that is number 1 priority! Sumakit tyan ko sa water nila just because nabilad sa init ata, and banana ha ha ha I’m just laughing half piece of banana, eh probing ya to kalhati LNG wow my goodness!! Ang illiit pa! Dapat hinain nyo na Lang kmi ng mga mangga dami nahuhulog LNG, ano ba nmn un saging na LNG pinag damot nyo pa samin, finisher shirt nakakasasama naman San k namn tumakbo ang finishers shirt mo sa 21km at 42km eh pede mo ibili Lang sa divisoria I was expecting good and u proud finisher shrt, binigay ko na LNG sa iba. Sa medal ok nmn buti nakakuha ako kaso ung iba wala kawawa nmn ung iba. Kaka Lungkot LNG, mukhang na tipid LNG at na I bulsa LNG lahat!
finally, the much awaited apology, well in addition to pattsteve, in fairness the route was great…. but next time put some markers i.e kilometer markers as this are important to serious runners, remember, you invited foreign runners, also i noticed at one particular water station, these volunteers were reusing disposable cups ewww! they were washing them in front of me and i noticed them after drinking my share, also they should refrain from smoking in front of the runners, there was also this particular marshal who was driving his motorcycle like a formula 1 racer to and from the route and it was really annoying especially the fumes and noise he was creating, a lot of professionals, doctors nurses, engineers i know ran the race and personally i was offended by that particular comment before the race where one of you said tama na ang drama and lets start the race, it was quite impolite and uncalled for, you should have added that to your apology
