London 2012 Olympics: Tiki Galena Breaks Olympics Record
Tiki Galena of Ethopia captures gold in the Women’s Marathon. Her time of 2 hours, 23 minutes and 7 seconds broke the previous Olympic mark of 2:23.14 by Naoko Takahashi of Japan in 2000 in Sydney. It rained during the event and the slippery streets did not slow them down.
For the USA, Shalane Flanagan (2:25.51) finished 10th, and training partner Kara Goucher was 11th (2:26.07). Desiree Davila of the USA dropped out during the race.
Priscah Jeptoo of Kenya won silver at 2:23:12. Tatyana Petrova Arkhipova of Russia won the bronze at 2:23:29.
It was a close match from start to finish with the 3 Kenyans, Kiplagat, Keitany and Jeptoo, leading the race. Kiplagat lost stream after KM32 and managed to finish 20th overall. Keitany kept the lead until KM40 but fell back when Galena made her move with a kilometer to go. Keitany finished 4th.
Petrova of Russia was not in the lead until 35KM. She was in the next pack with Flanagan of USA. All of a sudden, she burst into the scene and joined the lead until KM40. But she was unable to keep up at KM41 when the Galena and Jeptoo turned to next gear and battled for the top spot.

More power to running community in our country!
hindi pa po pang olympic standard ang mga time natin dito eh… 🙂
yun lang…
haha kakatawa toh, hindi basta basta ang standard ng olympics! 🙂
