wow 100km ilang araw po iyon
this is it! prepare to conquer my dear hometown! Go for 100!
antindi mo tlga pare hahaha! il go for 50k lng cguro muna dito!
this will be my first year anniversary sa pagtakbo kya puspusan sa ensayo for the aim of 100.
mountain climbing has a different discipline from trail running..so mas mahirap ito kumpara sa mga mountain climbing…
Yeah, I agree.
Hindi ka naman tatakbo pag mountain climbing. ;D
you said it is a different discipline. pano mo na-conclude mas mahirap ang isa ang isa ay hindi. everyone who can afford the regisration fee on running can run. but anyone who has a money can climb a mountain that easily.
Trail Running – Mas mahirap
Mountain Climbing – mahirap
Trail Running – mahirap
Mountain Climbing – hindi mahirap
*superlative comparison
Kaya wag nyo na pong pagtalunan. 🙂
Given:
Same route
Same distance
Mountain Climber vs. Trail Runner
Who is faster? (agility)
*Just hydration support, no heavy backpacks
I bet, it’s the trail runner who will finish first. 🙂
But who is the strongest?(strength)
*Both have heavy backpacks
I bet, it’s the mountain climber who will finish first. 🙂
No need to try just to prove. Just a simple analysis. 😀
@emptybull
Maraming salamat po. Tama po, kaya ko nasabi na mas mahirap ang trail running coz i was referring to the rules of running especially in ultramarathon (trail).
@sobi
Dito kasi may hinahabol kang oras which makes it too difficult. Imagine yourself kung ilang oras mo matatapos ang 100km with an approximate 2,900meters elevation (ex: Mt Sto Tomas to Mt Pulag). If kaya mo matapos yun ng about 24hrs or less then you’re strong enough. I’m a recreational mountain climber too kaya alam ko kung anong hirap ang umakyat sa mga bundok for a week.
try nyo pareho ng malaman nyo.
@mykroshey mga 100times..wag ka na sumali mahirap kc to..3k 3k ka n lng muna..
tama si @yup, try mo to see the difference. try to beat the 30hrs limit for a 100k trail run and a mountain climbing with a 30kg backpack non-stop for 30hrs and see the difference…
hope to see you in this trail by this time… relax and enjoy the view of nature…
or if you’re into a more exciting one then try to join the JEST training offered by SAF, SR, SF or SWAG.
Running is different from climbing. mas maganda nga kung try nyo muna running for 30 hrs and climbing for 30 hrs…
We can never compare Trail Runners to Mountain Climbers in terms of who is better than the other, or which one is more difficult.
TRAIL RUNNING IS NEVER MORE DIFFICULT THAN MOUNTAIN CLIMBING,
LIKEWISE, MOUNTAIN CLIMBING IS NEVER MORE DIFFICULT THAN TRAIL RUNNING!!!
They are 2 different sports, and they are both very difficult, if, you do not train for them properly. This is trail running we are talking about, and it is easy to say that a trail runner would simply outrun a mountain climber to reach the finish line first. But, given a mountain climber trains with enough time to be a good trail runner, then the odds of getting to the finish line first would be even, likewise if a trail runner includes in his /her training program the art of efficient mountain climbing. Mountain climbers’ are known for their ability to efficiently breath even on very high grounds, were the air is cold and thin, and they can do this carrying lots and lots of weights on their backs, while moving up and down the mountains! Elite Trail Ultra Marathoners like Scott Jurek, Kilian Jornet, Tony Krupicka, and Marshall Ulrich were first mountaineers before they become Ultra’s Titans! It will be an advantage to you MYKROSHEY, if you are already an experienced mountain climber, then you would train to be an ultra runner! You already have that unique strength and endurance, specially when going uphills and downhills. You just have to train yourself how to unleash those power more efficiently while running! Just train properly. Trainings for trail running, trekking, mountain climbing, and cross-training all goes hand in hand to achieve ones optimum physique when tackling different types of terrain. I hope this comment would help you MYKROSHEY.
As for me, I’m still making a decision to go 100km, from my 50km last year, but it still depends on my fitness a month before the race. ‘Listen’ to your body, but train also your body to ‘listen’ to you.
Good luck on your training, and I know that you are very capable to do ultras in the future! 🙂
may shuttle service ba ito? 🙂
I agree with BarefootTrail_RRBSI.
“Altitude has attitude.” Listen to your body, sometimes mentally you want to finish the race but physically incapable. For me, ultra-marathon is for the elite runners. I mean “elite,” those who can run for 50 or more than 100km distance in a standard time. “hindi puede yung itry ko lang or naligaw lang”. You need a serious training before the race.
From 22km last year, I will join in the 50km category. “It was tough, punishing, and tiring but still rewarding.”
update po…
ILL JOIN THIS RUN FOR MY 2ND ULTRA RUNNING GO FOR THE TNF 100 HORRAHHH STABILITY UNDER PRESSURE DO IT LONGERRRRRRR….
i think 50k will be the distance for me. puro half marathon pa lang kasi tinatakbo ko.by april cguro nakakapag duathlon nako.run bike run. muna
may cut off b to…san ano ruta
If the same as last year, yes meron po itong cut-off time =)
Registration Update please…thanks…
Sino kaya pwede makapace namin dito?
kaylan b ung registration d2???
My take on Mountaineering VS Trail running.
For mykroshey and beginners
First, let’s put it in proportion and discus several details. Mountaineering and Trail-running in the Philippines in general (doable for most people). Since nandito naman lahat tayo. 🙂
Mt. Guiting-Guiting, Mt. Halcon and Mt. Mantalingajan, with an average climb difficulty 9/9, Trail Class 5. And Carstensz Pyramid are also part of Mountaineering
Now, can we say Trail-running of 100KM is more difficult than climbing these mountains? That’s Mountaineering too…
Mountaineering is not just climbing Mt.Maculot, Gulogod Baboy and Batulao… And Trail-running is not just doing a 100km.
That’s why we need to be particular and put things in proportion before we compare and conclude.
In general most conducted Trail-Runs here are within 10K to 25K in distance wherein most beginners and recreational runners are participating. I suppose no beginner would dare to run an ultra-Marathon (Trail) right-away. As-well as doing a major climb like Guiting-guting…
Thus it would be more clear/visual, appropriate to compare a 25Km Trail running to minor/average Mountaineering. Since it’s also not usual to see a 50Km to 100Km trail from base to summit na bundok sa Pilipinas.
Let’s define hirap/difficulty in relation to these activities. – It’s the sum of physical, mental, emotional stress that we’re experiencing during, after and even before doing these activities.
I would say Mas-mahirap ang Mountaineering as to Trail Running. (My opinion) Pero parehas mahirap 🙂
Generally in terms of:
1.Kind of trail – Base to summit, more traversing, unmarked trails.
2.Security – No marshals/medics, encounter with armed people is possible. Getting lost frequently.
3.Preparation /logistics – No water stations, tedious preparations, transporting with heavy loads. Pitching your tent, cooking your food under a thunderstorm for several times. Break camp.
4.Loads – Traversing and descending river-crossing while carrying parts of your house room, kitchen and restroom. Repeat…
Most conducted trail runs in our country do not include reaching the summit of a mountain, minimal traversing is required, and trails are already established and marked combination of road and trails. These are usually categorized as “Fun Climb” Difficulty 3/9, Trail Class 2-3 in mountaineering.
Example:
Merrell Adventure Run 21k category in Timberland Heights Trail Class Trail Class 2-3 in my perspective (considered as one of the tough trail runs of 2012). Average time for finishers is 3 hours combination of running and walking (I witnessed more walking). -Trail Running
Same trail, but take-away the markings, water stations, marshals and medics. Then carry a mountaineering bag half or a 3rd of your weight in (mountaineer phase). –Mountaineering
San ka mas mahihirapan?
How about;
Traversing Mt. Arayat. Difficulty 5/9, Trail class 1-4 (10kms) popular destination for climbers (Not the hardest) No markings, marshal medics barely visible trails, 70 to 80 degrees boulders that you have to traverse and giant mosquitoes. Trail length is way lesser than 21km. I don’t think a regular trail-runner can reach the summit in 3 hours not mention that he/she still needs to descend. A typical climb for mountaineers with heavy loads.
Time pressured.
Well, I can give it to trail-running but mountaineering is also time pressured since you’re following a Climb Itinerary. You cannot just walk slowly and relax as you want.
Running continuously… 5 to 30 hours?
Typical/ casual trail-runners do run in trail, continuously? I doubt, I’ve joined several trail runs most participants do approximately 70% walking 30% running and almost everyone walks at the end part. You can do your own comfortable phase and would still make it to the 4 to 5 hrs cutoff time for 21km.
But in mountaineering 90% walking with traversing 10% rest with tons of load.
Both are doable and enjoyable, just have some time to prepare, research and learn important details and gauge your limitation.
*I both love these activities; my opinions are based from my actual experiences.
My points are let’s not just concluded and even discourage someone from doing something without giving enough details and putting things in proportion.
-Just my two cents 🙂
@boyzilla – +100 on your comment…hehehe…
just have one comment:”I suppose no beginner would dare to run an ultra-Marathon (Trail) right-away. As-well as doing a major climb like Guiting-guting…” – haven’t tried ultra-marathon or even a full mary, call me crazy, but i will definitely run for 50K here…before i was in doubt, but after seeing the video you post/re-post on youtube, i made up my mind…will do the 50K…hehehe…
for sure there will be some experts, people who thinks they were expert, some that has experience on events like this(just dont know if there will be crazy people like me) na makakasabay ko along the way…i’ll just watch and learn…
all i need to prepare/know are the things in need to carry…the most essential ones…having all that, i can say that “im good to go”…
hope to see you again here…
Sa’n ba tayo pwede maka register nito?
Hi john,
How was the experience sa Corregidor?
I will call you crazy if it’s just a month from now. And if you will not properly train/prepare for it. 4-months is not ideally but will be adequate period to learn what you need to know, to at least finish the race alive 🙂 hehe.
Gawa ulit ako ng blog for essential equipment where to buy and alternative brands para makatipid ka 🙂
best run for 2012…hehehe…sa 4th ill try to make my PR…puro picture and video kase ginawa ko kaya inabot ako ng 2hrs 45mins eh…hehehe
well thats one thing…i’ve been training…been doing uphill run everyweek…and hopefully bike everyday(kaka-start ko pa lang last week…)sana nga lang maging enough yun para sa 50K ng TNF…hehehe…
thanks…hehehe…
Wanna join this run kahit 11 or 22 k lang..kaso lang sana may shuttle…;) from manila para convenient

So far my training is climbing mountains with heavy backpacks and mostly run on the trail.
Just this year, I’ve already climb 5 mountains (1 major).
Anyone would like to share your training style? I’m interested to learn.
Or anyone would like to join me to have a training trail run in Mt. Pico De Loro. Kindly reply here. 🙂

Hello guys, can i just ask your tips reg what type of gadgets, hydration and possible gels, foods that are safe to bring during the race. Im about to go on my 50km. Ty
1. Hydration bag
2. Trekking Pole (optional, but an advantage on steep & muddy trails)
3. Jelly Ace (carbs) & Banana (potassium) or any energy gel
4. Headlamps
5. Windbreaker (it’s cold in the trail in Baguio-Benguet during early in the morning and late evening)
Hi,
What is the average finish time for the 100K and 50K? Where can I view last years result? Thanks!
Cocoy
joined 11k last year, will be running 22k this time…one at a time, baby steps 🙂
Meron po and adequate as per last year. Better to bring water bottle as-well.
guys just to make it clear etong nabasa “Race briefing will be at R.O.X. Camp John Hay at 3pm, April 19, 2013. Race course, logistic areas, hydration, gears, cut-off times will all be discussed here. This will also give runners ample time to rest and secure mandatory equipment for the race.” okay lang ba ndi na umattend kc im planning to go to manila on 20th of april. saka un onine registration is un singlet sa baquio lang or campjohn hay ang claiming wla ba sa store nlng un claiming?
this is for 11k run
wow! running with heavy packs(55L, 65L or 85L full pack?) on uneven grounds..Astig!
No heavy backpacks ma’am/sir. 🙂
nabasa ko po kasi training post mo sir feb 9, running with heavy packs.. 🙂 i wish i could train like you sir.
Not really sir/mam, those packs are for climbing not trail running.
The briefing at camp john hay is only for the 50 and 100 runners. Last year we were there since TNF did not clearly said na it was for the ultra only. 21k kami and madami kami dun may mga 11k runners din. Sayang pag mamadali. But this time we’re officially attending the briefing medyo nag level up kami ni GF Hehe 🙂
Good luck sir! 🙂
pag aralan ang elevation ng 50k at 100k. hindi biro yan. and oras bibilangin jan, mental toughness and other obstacles. cut off ng 50k is 18hrs, 100 is 30 hrs. ingat sa bangin.
sizes of shirt are too big for women. they should have considered most runners have lean body..
It would be advisable to bring one. Even 10 mins of darkness is crucial baka matalisod ka pa and ma injured within that time. Check my last post below. May recommendations kami dun where to buy less expensive gears for trail runs.
please extend the deadline of reg. was suppose to go moa last sat but got stuck in traf. went sun only to find out it was closed already.. i hope you can still add additional slots and/or extend the deadline.. was really hoping to run this race. God bless..
ok lang ba mag-camp-out dun?
may shuttle service po ba?how much?
how sad, we were not able to register for this run, closed na yung sa ROX Baguio… Pang-taper run sana after ng LUUM2. Anyway, for those looking for a place to stay and those who have no place to stay at in Baguio, we have a transient place good for 8 people. It’s a house with 2 rooms with 4 double-deck beds each. If interested po, here’s our link: http://sulit.com.ph/6238773 and if your going to send a text message, please indicate re: TNF runner. Thanks much!!!
Runners here are some reminders/notes based from our previous TNF100 run. Sharing our experiences. Sana makatulong sa ibang mga katanungan nyo.
