25 Year Old Runner Dies While Running 10K
A friend in Singapore told me about a sad news of 25 year old girl who died last Sunday while running the Nike We Run 10K event. She was already near the finish line when she collapsed. She was rushed to the hospital but was pronounced dead. I later read the news at Malaysia Chronicle.
The girl was known to be healthy. It was not her first time to be running. She runs regularly with her long time boyfriend. Both of them are Teakwondo instructors. Both of them are planning to get married this year and even started buying house.

She collapsed at the last 250m of the race. She did not run fast. She even complained being tired early in the race and would walk.
I always feel sad hearing news like this. While running regularly is proven to be healthy, it also has its risks. There have been incidents of sudden deaths during fun runs, marathons and triathlons here in Manila. While most of the sudden death incidents are in the longer distances like 21K and 42K, it may happen also in distances like a 10K. There were even deaths in 5K especially in challenge or obstacles races.
I hope this serves as a reminder to all participants of fun runs and marathons.
Be aware of the risks when participating in these events. Below are some advice from experts on how to avoid sudden deaths. You can read the complete article on How to Avoid Sudden Deaths in Marathon here. These running tips are true for marathons, half marathons and even for 10K or 5K runs.
1. Have yourself checked. Get a regular physical exam to check for health risks. Discuss your running goals with your doctor.
2. Prepare and train for your race. Running looks easy but it can very risky when your body is not well prepared. Find a training plan that is appropriate for your fitness level.
3. Stop running if symptoms are felt like chest pain, dizziness, fatigue, or difficulty in breathing. Ask for help right away from fellow runners or medical staff.
4. Maintain your pace. Do not sprint to the finish line unless you have trained for it.
5. Hydrate. Drink just enough sports drink during the race. Drink for thirst. Avoid too little or too much hydration when running.
Have a safe run.
Moral Lesson: Gradual progression towards longer distance races.

A National Geographic show asked the audience which one will live longer based on statistics- someone who runs or someone who walks- the answer is- someone who walks as running is not that good to your body- so better bike or walk than run…
She might have health problems that she didn’t notice because of her lifestyle she thinks everything is well about her because she and her long time boyfriend involves in some active sports.regular checkup and consultation is very important!
I guess, the problem is…even if you are a long time runner… nobody really check one’s health. and… the Do’s and Don’ts are still not clear… Like how much hydration is required? do you have enough potassium? Sodium? Etc.
and most importantly… when does your body REALLY give up? because, it’s quite common to easily give up; but when should you really give up?
NEVER GIVE UP!!! HEHE KAHIT NA GAWIN MO PA ANG RITUAL MO NA DO’S AND DONT’S WHILE RUNNING AT YUNG MGA NAG COMMENT NA NANINIWALA NA ORAS MUNA, TALAGANG MAPAPADALI ORAS NYO DAHIL LALABAS NA YUNG MGA TINATAGO NYONG SAKIT SA SARAP NG KINAKAIN NYO… LALO NA YUNG PORK FOODS IBURN NYO LANG SA TAKBO PARA LALONG MAPADALI AFTER THE WORKOUT THEN KAIN ULIT… GOOD LUCK RUNNERS.
its a reality in life that death can occur anytime to anyone. Statistics will prove that there are more deaths while just resting at home, while at work, while crossing a street, while traveling and others possible scenarios as against death while running. Continue running and live life to your desire.
If my understanding is correct, the girl had congenital problem which caused the sudden cardiac arrest. I think the moral lesson is to have a thorough fitness examination regularly to detect early abnormalities in your health.
a regular vist to the doctor for a check up is not something you should miss, especially if you are in a lot of activities,at least you know the status of your body… brain sometimes dictate different things from what your body feels… take this for example, you are running alone for quite sometime and you feel tired suddenly you saw an acquintance running and you run with them, you don’t want to stop your brain said it’s fun to run along with them you will be inspired to run for more and your body will go with it but you don’t know that your body is feeling the heat and if you are unlucky you will drop like a bird from the sky
She might have hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy.
..what’s the finding of the cause of death of the
girl?
My father died of a heart attack few hours after running a 10k. He felt chest pain after the event and went to the hospital. He was 46 years old then. I started running at age 37 and now at 43 finished 29 marathons averaging 4:36, and looking forward to my next marathon.
your father died after 10K. your finished 29 marathons.
what is your point ?
RIP
OK YAN! KUMAIN PA KAYO NG BABOY AT MAMANTIKANG PAGKAIN! AKALA NILA IBURN LANG NILA SA KATAWAN YUNG MGA FATS AT MGA KINAING TABA, HINDI NYO LANG ALAM MAS MARAMING HARMFUL EFFECTS YAN KESA SA PROTEIN NA GUSTO NYO MAKUHA…. POOR IN HEALTH KNOWLEDGE MEANS YOU WERE NEXT IN LINE….
