In search for Street Art in Penang
Penang travel guides and brochures would recommend checking out the different street art all over George Town. George Town is the capital city of the Malaysian state of Penang and was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
I had a chance to run around Penang during my stay for the Penang Bridge Internation Marathon in 2016. I love art and going around George Town to see the art on walls sounds exciting to me. Thus, I decided to have runabout in George Town to see its famous street art.
There are two main series of street art in George Town. There’s the Welded Iron Wall Caricatures and Street Art by Ernest Zacharevic. Seeing all of them is about a 3-5 KM walk. The best time to see them will be early morning when there are fewer people so you can have the street art for yourself and avoid the lines.
I preferred looking around for Ernest Zacharevic’s Street Art. I skipped the caricatures although they are actually interesting as well. Looking for the artworks are tricky. Some are easy to spot while others need some scavenger hunt skills. I actually missed one of his works that I had to go back to find it again.
I started my run at around 6AM. It was still dark in Penang. But as the dawn breaks, the effect of the morning sky on the wall was gorgeous.
I followed the guide from Slow Vegan Travel on where to find the street art by Ernest Zacharevic. The Penang Global Tourism has a guide for both the street art and the iron works caricatures.
It took me more than an hour to check out the street art by Ernest Zacharevic. I even found other artworks that are just as interesting.
So if you get to be staying around George Town in Penang, be sure to have a nice and easy run to see there cool works. Some of them are fading, so see them while they are still around.
