Adidas Runners Manila Captain Finishes 2019 BMW Berlin Marathon
Martie Plaza, one of the revered captains of adidas Runners Manila (aRM), completed the 2019 BMW Berlin Marathon last September 29 in Berlin, Germany. She finished with a time of 3 hours and 28 minutes.
The Berlin marathon was the second time Plaza finished one of the six marathons in the Abbott World Marathon Majors. Her first was during the 2017 New York City Marathon. Other cities which hold marathon majors included: Tokyo, London, Chicago, and Boston.
Plaza leads the bi-weekly tempo and speed sessions of aRM in BGC, Taguig. According to her, this routine has helped increase her stamina and speed in time for the marathon.
Aside from the physical training, the aRM captain believes that what helped her get through the marathon was the support she got from family, friends, and the adidas Runners community. Cheers from fellow adidas Runners from across the globe kept her energy up during the last few kilometers of the race.
In a statement, Plaza quoted world-renowned female athlete Gabe Grunewald who passed away June this year.“Don’t give up on the things that make you feel alive.’
“Running makes me feel alive, and I am very grateful for the opportunity to represent AR Manila in something as prestigious as the Berlin Marathon, where I got to do what I love to do,” said Plaza.
Local celebrities like Kim Atienza, Tim Yap, and Dingdong Dantes are among the Filipino delegates who joined the event.
Meanwhile, Kenenisa Bekele missed the world marathon record currently held by Eliud Kipchoge by just two seconds. Bekele clocked in at 2 hours, 1 minute and 41 seconds.
