adidas Pledges €1.5m to Global Sustainability Through Move for the Planet
In a move that turned sports activity into positive global action, adidas recently launched the Move For The Planet initiative, with over 1.2 million people worldwide participating. The initiative led to the tracking of 173 million active minutes in the adidas Running app across 34 sports, prompting adidas to donate €1 to Common Goal for every 10 minutes of activity, up to €1.5m.
Campaign Supports Sports-based Global Projects
Ashley Czarnowski, Senior Director, Global Purpose Marketing at adidas, hailed the efforts, saying, “We encourage our global sporting community to turn activity into action and move for the places we play – and they did just that! Sport has the power to unite people, to drive societal change, and to make a real, meaningful difference – and seeing this in action is so rewarding. We’re looking forward to seeing the impact Move For The Planet will have supporting global projects like the Indochina Starfish Foundation.”
The funds raised will boost projects worldwide that employ sports to educate and engage communities. One recipient of this support is ISF Cambodia, a charity with 16 years of experience in leveraging sport and education to transform lives.
ISF Cambodia to Install Solar Panels with adidas Funding
ISF will use the funds to install solar panels on their football fields, thereby creating safer, renewable energy-powered spaces for girls and the wider community to practice. The initiative also includes educating ISF about environmental sustainability through sports and Football for Future and Common Goals.
This initiative aligns with ISF’s ongoing workshops on environmental protection, single-use plastic, and waste management processes. These workshops empower the participating children and young adults to become positive community influencers.
adidas’s Broader Commitment to Sustainability
Move For The Planet aligns with adidas’ extensive sustainability efforts. Earlier in the year, adidas announced its success in substituting virgin polyester with recycled polyester. They reached this target ahead of the scheduled end of 2024, achieving 96% of all the polyester used as recycled in 2022 alone.
Looking forward to 2024 and beyond, adidas plans to shift its focus beyond recycled polyester. The company intends to explore new raw materials, redesign products for a circular end-of-life solution, and reduce its carbon footprint. More details on adidas’ sustainability efforts can be found on their official website.
