MILO Launches Safe Swim Program to Combat Drowning Risks Among Children

As part of its 60th-anniversary celebration, MILO Philippines has introduced the MILO® Safe Swim – Drown Prevention Program, a nationwide initiative aimed at equipping children and parents with essential water safety skills. This program, launched in partnership with the Philippine Red Cross, tackles a pressing issue: drowning remains a leading cause of death among Filipino children aged 0-14, claiming an average of 3,200 young lives annually.

A Collaborative Effort to Promote Water Safety

The program, designed to address the lack of emergency water training, merges MILO®’s advocacy for accessible sports with the Philippine Red Cross’s expertise in first aid and rescue. Together, they aim to encourage water confidence and reduce drowning incidents across the country.

Swimtech Delivers Fundamental Swimming Skills

The first phase of the Safe Swim program focused on teaching essential water skills in Quezon City, Pasig City, and Cavite City. Through collaboration with Swimtech, elementary school children were introduced to foundational techniques such as floating, kicking, and staying calm in the water. These skills form the basis of drowning prevention and help participants respond effectively to emergencies.

The program’s second half concentrated on emergency preparedness, led by experts from the Philippine Red Cross. Participants were introduced to the “reach, throw, don’t go” rescue technique, which teaches safe methods to assist others in trouble without putting oneself at risk.

This session also covered basic first aid skills, including identifying unsafe water practices and responding effectively during emergencies. These lessons emphasized the importance of preparation and responsibility in water safety scenarios.

A Community-Wide Impact

The MILO Safe Swim – Drown Prevention Program has not only imparted technical skills but has also instilled confidence and a safety-first mindset among participants. Parents have witnessed their children grow more self-assured in water activities, while children have gained a deeper understanding of how to navigate water safely.

With the success of this year’s pilot programs, MILO® Safe Swim is set to expand to more cities nationwide in 2025, reaching even more Filipino families.
